The Sea Sessions 2012 Festival line-up has finally been announced! Following the success of the award-winning festival’s 2011 stellar line-up, event organisers have pulled out all the stops to bring you what promises to be this year’s biggest beach party, jam-packed with exciting activities and pumping tunes all in the surrounds of beautiful Bundoran, Co. Donegal!
The original ’24 Hour Party People’ are back with the definitive line-up for the first time in over 19 years; Bez, Gary Whelan, Mark Day, Paul Davies, Paul Ryder, Rowetta and Shaun Ryder. ‘Hallelujah’ it’s the Happy Mondays. After dominating the pop charts in the late 80′s and early 90′s, the Mancunian band will take to the Main Stage on Sunday, playing classics from their well-known albums; ‘G-Man’ (1987), ‘Bummed’ (1988), ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills’ and ‘Bellyaches’ (1990), along with more recent releases. ‘Step On’ & let the good times roll with the Kings of Madchester!
Riot starters Kaiser Chiefs rock into Bundoran on June 29th, comprising of vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick Baines and drummer Nick Hodgson. The Leeds natives resurrect the spirit of The Jam with their ‘I Predict A Riot’ supercharged power pop hit that quickly electrified Britain and further afield when it was released in 2004, followed by their debut double platinum album; ‘Employment,’ which remained in the top ten charts for several months, becoming one of the best-selling artists of 2005. Not forgetting their second album; ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’ (2007), yielded ‘Ruby’, a number one single in the UK. 2008 brought their third album ‘Off With Their Heads’, and following a three-year hiatus, they returned to the studio & released ‘The Future Is Medieval’ in June 2011. Don’t miss the bands foot-stomping live performance on the Main Stage on Friday night.
Top Irish act The Coronas have risen through the ranks to become one of the biggest bands in the country, with three hit albums to their name, numerous awards, and a succession of hugely well received live tours. Expect them to liven-up the main stage on Saturday night with their foot stomping singles ‘Addicted To Progress’ and ‘Mark My Words’.
Simon & Oscar (OCEAN COLOUR SCENE) will arrive in Bundoran to play a very special acoustic set, not to be missed. The duo themselves command sellout crowds just as much as they do with the full band, and never fail to disappoint with hits such as ‘The Day We Caught The Train’, ‘Hundred Mile High City’, ‘Better Day’ and ‘Travellers Tune’.
Despite the name, Fujiya & Miyagi are neither Japanese nor a duo. The Brighton boys are known for their electronic sound heavily influenced by Krautrock and the likes of Aphex Twin, or so they say themselves. ‘Ankle Injuries’ was a massive club hit and their live shows are known for their tight, hypnotic and pulsating electronic sound.
FLYING THE IRISH FLAG:
Not to be outdone by our neighbours, local Irish talent will be strongly represented again this year with live performances from JAPE (Double Choice Prize winner), DELORENTOS, WE CUT CORNERS, NEON WOLF, TOBY KAAR and THIS CLUB. Returning by popular demand are THE MINUTES, HAM SANDWICH & electro-pop outfit BITCHES WITH WOLVES, to mention a few.
BREAKBEATS IN THE HOUSE:
Famously known as the ‘Run’ in RUN DMC, Rev RUN is a respected rapper from the golden age of Hip-Hop, who broke out on his own in the mid-2000′s. Run and his friend Darryl McDaniels formed the rap group RUN DMC, with Jam Master Jay completing the group’s lineup in 1982. They went on to sell millions of albums and brought Hip-Hop from the underground on to daytime chart topping radio, thus paving the way for future Hip-Hop stars. Their hits include ‘It’s Like That’, ‘It’s Tricky’, and their rock-fusion hit of Aerosmiths’s ‘Walk This Way’. Run released his solo album ‘Distortion’ in 2005, so expect some cool cuts from this reverend of Hip-Hop on the Main Stage in Bundoran!
Darren Foreman, better known as Beardyman, is a musician from London renowned for his beatboxing skills and use of live-looping technology. He found world-wide fame when he uploaded The Kitchen Diaries; a spoof cookery show which used beats as ingredients on to various video-sharing sites, which led to appearances on Lily Allen’s chat show, a support slot on Groove Armada’s U.K. tour, and a performance at Glastonbury. The “King of Sound and Ruler of Beats” according to the BBC, is not to be missed at this year’s festival.
Following the success of last year, the BEAT SHACK is back with another stellar line-up of world-class DJs, including headliners; Krafty Kuts, Raf Daddy (The 2 Bears), LTJ Bukem feat MC Conrad, along with Billy Scurry, Pete Isaac, Dom Servini, Scribble Sound System & Michael Keep Schtum.
ONES TO WATCH:
The Hot 8 Brass Band are an original bona fide marching brass band from the city of New Orleans, who most recently featured in series 2 of ‘Treme’ as both actors and performers. Founded by Bennie Pete, Jerome Jones, and Harry Cook, The Hot 8 have been playing traditional New Orleans brass band music professionally since 1995. The band have most recently appeared at The Apollo with Dr. John, Lou Reed, Nicolas Payton and others for the annual Great Day in Harlem. They have released three critically acclaimed recordings and are featured on the latest Blind Boys of Alabama recording on Time-Life Records.
Canadian indie rock band Yukon Blonde will stop off in Bundoran during their world tour, to perform ‘Warm Summer Harmonies’ from their album ‘Tiger Talk’. The track, ‘Radio’, assaults the speakers with a brash stomp worthy of early Elvis Costello, while ‘Oregon Shores’ blends its bouncy rhythm and sunny vocal harmonies with an epic, face-melting guitar solo, whilst another of their popular songs, My Girl, taps into power pop greatness with its “whoa-oh” refrain. Expect these tunes to become your anthems of Spring/Summer!
England’s best Disco and House live import Crazy P will be playing tracks off their latest album, ‘When We On’[, alongside their back catalogue. Expect a cracking live performance with the usual charisma from front woman Danielle Moore!
Irish duo We Cut Corners write short songs on drums and guitar. The critically acclaimed debut album ‘Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards’ was released in Ireland in 2011 and was nominated for the Choice Music Prize for Irish album of the year. (Hot Press) 4**** “Lyrics are great throughout, reminiscent of Belle & Sebastian at their most sweetly caustic.” This buzz band should not be missed on the sunny shores of Bundoran in June!
The water is going to be just as hot as the music this year with Ireland’s largest cash prize in surfing on offer. Barefoot Wines have pulled out all the corks to get behind the landmark event which is the only surf competition in Ireland to be sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Europe. The Barefoot Wine Expression Session in association with Billabong will see the top surfers of Europe eyeing up the cash prize and taking each other on in a viewer friendly format.
“Last year the Expression Session was the first speciality event ASP Europe endorsed in Ireland or the UK, and saw the best of Europe pitted against the best in Ireland and the UK. It’s a testament to the quality of the event that’s staged here in Bundoran and also the quality of the waves in the area that it’s happening again this year” said festival organiser and co-owner of Bundoran Surf Co. Pete Craig. “The format is simple, the best move/wave depending on conditions wins the heat, simple as.”
Once again, this event will further cement Ireland’s place as one of the world’s best surfing destinations whilst giving exposure to some of the best surfers that ride its waves. There will be a waiting period from the Friday to the Monday of the Sea Sessions weekend, with a ‘retro event’ taking place on the Saturday which will be open to all surfers.
